Ironwood was an incredible accomplishment by Project Tachyon, Valar Group, ZODL, and the Zcash Foundation, and Shielded Labs was proud to contribute to it. ZODL did a ton of the implementation work on the protocol and the wallet and migration infrastructure needed to support Ironwood. Valar Group and Project Tachyon wrote many of the consensus changes and led most of the audit and formal verification work. The Zcash Foundation integrated and deployed the consensus changes in Zebra and worked with ZODL to help infrastructure partners upgrade. Ironwood is a great example of what we're capable of when there's a real emergency. However, we shouldn't need to operate with that level of urgency for every upgrade. For non-emergency upgrades, we should give teams more time to audit and harden the code, avoid putting engineers under unnecessary pressure, and give infrastructure partners more time to prepare. We can still ship quickly without taking unnecessary risks or burning people out. We're also doing more to make Zcash harder to break. More formal verification, AI-powered auditing, and stronger network-layer privacy protections will make future problems less likely to turn into emergencies and give us more time to respond when something does go wrong.
